Two parades - Saturday, October 27!

There are two parades coming up on Saturday, October 27th. The first one is the Annandale Parade down Columbia Pike. You can watch the fun OR be a part of the parade! If you'd like to be part of the parade, meet Harry Pope, our RBCA President, at the United Methodist Church parking lot on Columbia Pike by 9:30am. You can ride in the back of his truck or walk along side and pass out candy.

The second parade of the day is the RBCA Halloween Parade on Saturday, October 27th, at 4pm. We meet at Claire Grumbly's house, 4804 Erie Street, march down Erie, up Heritage to Newcastle and back to Erie Street. If you live along the parade route, or would just like to, please pass out candy to the children, and make a dog bone to our canine marchers! Yes, the Halloween Parade is open to all children and pets. Please invite your friends, neighbors, grandchildren and more to our annual Halloween Parade!! After the parade, there will be cupcakes and punch.

RBCA's "National Night Out" Ice Cream Social will be held on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the grounds of Ravensworth Baptist Church at the corner of Kalorama Road and Bristow Drive in Annandale.

RBCA is partnering with the West Springfield Police as well as area residents and merchants to be a part of National Night Out to:

• Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
• Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
• Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
• Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Spring Egg Hunt Saturday, April 7 at 10 a.m.

Our annual RBCA Spring Egg Hunt is Saturday April 7th at 10am. It will be held on the back lawn of the First Presbyterian Church, corner of Erie Street and Newcastle Drive. BYOB - Bring Your Own Basket! We will have about 30 dozen eggs stuffed full of goodies! All children are welcome. The Public Hearing on the Heritage Mall Proposal before the Board of Supervisors will be held at 5 P.M. on Monday, September 11, 2006 at Fairfax County Government Center.

RBCA has submitted written comments to the Board of Supervisors and a representative of RBCA will speak before the Board of Supervisors.

The public hearing will be shown live on Fairfax County Government Cable Channel 16 either on cable TV or on the web site.

Volunteer Crossing Guards Needed

Yes, it isn't an illusion. We have one volunteer crossing guard working to help children, parents and neighbors get safely across Heritage Drive on school days. But she is only one person! And she has five children! We have two more volunteers to be trained, but we need even more or our volunteer crossing guard program will be cancelled by the principal. Can you volunteer one morning or one afternoon a week? That's only twenty minutes helping families. Please contact Molly Hobbs to find out about training.

Fairfax County Planning Commission Mark-up Wednesday July 26 @ 8:15 P.M.

The Fairfax County Planning Commission will hold its Area Plans Review Mark-up Meeting on Wednesday, July 26, at 8:15 P.M. at Fairfax County Government Center. This mark-up meeting will include the REVISED Heritage Mall proposal and the Planning Commission staff recommendation will be offered at that time. The mark-up meeting is a public meeting, but no public testimony is heard.

The mark-up hearing can be seen live on Cable Channel 16 or by viewing it on the Cable Channel 16 web site. Note that there is no archive of these public hearings -- you see it live or you miss it entirely.

Heritage Mall Meeting at Annandale High School -- Tuesday July 18 @ 7:30 PM

PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND!!!!

Tuesday, July 18th at 7:30 PM at Annandale High School, there will be a meeting with the Heritage Mall property developers and the community about the Heritage Mall redevelopment proposal. Captain Jack Hurlock of the West Springfield Police District will attend. Fairfax County School Board member Tessie Wilson has also been invited to address issues concerning Braddock Elementary School. Unofficially, RBCA representatives have been told that the community will be "pleased with the new proposal" as it will address parking and traffic issues.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!
PLEASE plan on attending this meeting as this will likely be the community's only chance to offer significant input into the redevelopment of the Heritage Mall property.

According to staff from Fairfax County Supervisor Sharon Bulova's office, notification about the meeting will be mailed to everyone that has signed the petition in opposition to the Heritage Mall proposal.

PLEASE TELL YOUR NEIGHBORS about this meeting and ask them to attend as well!

Please plan on attending the Fairfax County Planning Commission Public Hearing on THURSDAY, JUNE 22 at 7:30 P.M. at Fairfax County Government Center in the Board Auditorium. RBCA President Harry Pope will speak before the Planning Commission and submit the hundreds of signatures gathered on our petition in opposition to the Heritage Mall proposal.

Please join us to discuss the Heritage Mall proposal to modify the Comprehensive Plan -- do you want residential housing (possibly 250 units?) at the current Heritage Mall site? What are your feelings about the effect on traffic, parking, safety, etc.? We need to be ready for our presentation to the Planning Commission on June 22.

Also, Molly Hobbs, president of the Braddock PTA, will join us to discuss the lack of a school crossing guard on Heritage Drive and what we as a Civic Association might be able to do to help change things.

Sharon Bulova recently sent out a letter to some of the homeowners in our neighborhood. Sharon Bulova will be hosting a neighborhood citizens meeting at Annandale High's cafeteria on February 21, 2006 at 7:30 PM. We will be able to ask questions and provide feedback about changes to the County's master plan that affects us.

AHS Homecoming Parade

Friday, October 28th at 4 PM is Annandale High School's Homecoming Parade. We will be out cheering on the high school as it marches through our neighborhood. Come join us! They travel Bristow to Newcastle to Erie to Heritage to Four Year Run. It's such a fun parade to watch.
